š¤A Letter To Your Future Self
Today I want to share one of the most powerful exercises from the 30-Day Belief Transformation Journal.
Itās called the Future Self Letter.
Thereās a psychological technique known as āilleismā: referring to yourself in third person. Research shows that when you use your name instead of āI,ā you create cognitive distance that helps you stay calmer under pressure, make better decisions, and see situations more objectively. People who use this perspective persist longer when things get hard.
In Beyond Belief, I explain the neuroscience: Your brain processes third-person perspective differently. It reduces emotional reactivity and increases clarity.
But hereās what makes it even more powerful: When you write about your future self in the third person, youāre no longer trapped inside todayās doubts. You begin to see the path forward the way you would see it for someone you care about, with patience, realism, and belief.
āļøThe Future Self Exercise
Imagine itās December 31, 2026. You achieved the goal you set at the start of the year.
Now write a letter about yourself in third person. Structure it this way:
(1) Opening: Describe the goal you achieved.
(2) Middle: Name the obstacles you expected to face and how you overcame them.
(3) The Turning Point: Identify the moment where you had a breakthrough. What did you change to make your goal more achievable? Was it a belief? A behavior?
(4) Closing: Reflect on what you learned about yourself in the process.
