The Invisible Barrier Costing You $20K/Year
(And what to do about it)
Meet Sarah and Jennifer, colleagues at a fast-growing tech company. Both are crushing their targets and are respected by their teams and leaders.
When a VP position opens at their company, their managers expect both to apply.
Sarah sees the posting, reads it once, and reads it again. Her internal dialogue starts running: “This is a stretch. You’ve been lucky so far. What if they figure out you’re not as good as they think?”
She closes the tab and tells herself she’ll revisit it later. She never does.
Jennifer sees the same posting, but her thoughts are a bit different: “I’ve delivered results. I can learn what I don’t know. Growth usually feels uncomfortable.” With that, she submits her application and lands the promotion.
VP roles typically come with a 15-20% salary increase—in this case, roughly $20K more per year—along with broader influence and visibility across the company.
The difference between Sarah and Jennifer wasn’t talent or experience. It was their belief operating system.
One missed opportunity might seem insignificant. But limiting beliefs don’t stop there. They shape which roles feel attainable, which conversations you initiate, which negotiations you attempt.
Multiply that $20K across every promotion Sarah doesn’t pursue, every stretch assignment she declines, every raise she doesn’t negotiate. Over 5 years, that single belief could cost her $100K+ in lost earnings, not to mention the confidence, influence, and career momentum that come with those roles.
💸What Are Your Beliefs Costing You?
In my new book Beyond Belief (out 10 March 2026), I discuss how your hidden beliefs are running the show—determining what you see, what you try, and possibly what you earn.
Research backs this up. A 22-year study found that beliefs about your ability to influence outcomes, measured in adolescence, predict your adult income as much as IQ and education.1
Translation: Your limiting beliefs have a price tag.
Think about the last year. How many times did you:
→ Hold back from an opportunity because you “weren’t ready yet”?
→ Decline a presentation opportunity because “you suck at presenting”?
→ Stay quiet in the meeting when you had a good idea?
The good news is that this operating system can be upgraded.
The cost of a belief isn’t limited to dollars and titles. Over time, it influences which rooms you step into, which risks you consider worth taking, and ultimately which version of yourself gets expressed.
In Beyond Belief, I lay out exactly how these belief systems form and how to redesign them so they expand your options instead of shrinking them.
If you’re ready to rethink the assumptions shaping your trajectory, you can preorder Beyond Belief here. Readers who preorder will also receive tools to help implement the system.
